The low-cost-carrier announced on Friday it would cancel between 1,680 and 2,100 flights over the next six weeks in an attempt to "improve punctuality", provoking indignation at passengers who suddenly have to make new travel plans.The low-cost Irish airline said it would eliminate 40 to 50 flights a day - "less than two percent" of its flight schedule - to address problems caused by delays in air traffic control (ATC) schedules vacation of pilots and cabin crews.
Throughout Friday, Ryanair's Twitter feed was filled with complaints from passengers who had their flights canceled, one describing the lack of notice of an "absolute misfortune" and another saying it was "shocking".
"We sincerely apologize to the small number of customers affected by these cancellations, and we will do our best to arrange alternative flights and / or full refunds for them," airline communications chief Robin Kiely said in a statement.
He explained: "We have operated a record schedule and traffic numbers during the summer months of July and August, but now we must allocate annual vacations to the pilots and cabin crew in September and October, while most of our summer.
"This increase in license at a time of delays in ATC capacity and strikes (in France) has drastically reduced our performance over the past two weeks to less than 80 percent.
"By canceling less than two percent of our flight schedule over the next six weeks, until our winter timetable begins in early November, we can improve the operational resilience of our programs and restore our annualized goal of 90 percent hundred".
